DfE survey on visits to Europe – have your say

The Department for Education is carrying out research into overseas school trips and would like to hear from teachers or school staff members who have organised educational visits to European countries. This is a critical time for overseas educational visits – please participate if you can to help inform policy making on this important topic.

To take part, email school.trips@education.gov.uk.

The DfE School Trip team has also launched an anonymous survey - live until 10 March. Click here to complete the survey.

Outdoor education legislation UPDATE

Two Bills introduced in the Scottish and UK Parliaments have both taken a step forward in recent weeks.

The Outdoor Education Bill, introduced by Tim Farron MP, had its first reading in the House of Commons and will be debated at Second Reading in July. The Bill aims to ensure that every child is offered at least one outdoor education experience during both primary school and secondary school.

In Scotland, members of the Education, Children and Young People Committee published a report of its inquiry into the Schools (Residential Outdoor Education) (Scotland) Bill. The Committee highlighted the “hugely positive impact that outdoor residential education can have on the development and attainment of children and young people” as it gave the Bill the go ahead to progress to the next legislative stage.

This is an important milestone in demonstrating the value of educational visits as an essential part of children and young people’s education. The next stage will involve debate and consideration of amendments in committee.
