NEW Eco Trip grant to support sustainable educational visits

Jake Wiid, Senior Educational Visits Adviser and MD of EVOLVE Advice

Educational visits specialist, EVOLVE Advice, is offering eight ‘Eco Trip’ grants of £250 to support schools in running sustainable educational visits.

Jake Wiid, Senior Educational Visits Adviser for EVOLVE Advice says: “We are delighted to launch this new grant, which schools can use towards environmentally friendly educational visits in the 2023/24 academic year.

“The challenges of climate change and the reduction in biodiversity impact us all at a local as well as a global level. Educational visits can be a powerful tool in educating and inspiring young people, helping them to develop a deeper understanding of the natural world and empowering them to make positive changes in their communities.

“These grants are designed to support schools in promoting sustainable practices and environmental awareness through educational visits. We also hope that schools will take this opportunity to look at how they can reduce the environmental impact of school trips as part of their broader approach to sustainability.

“We look forward to receiving applications from schools that share our commitment to creating a more sustainable future”.

EVOLVE Advice encourages schools to make use of their local learning area but here are some ways to make educational visits environmentally friendly if you are travelling further afield:

1.     Make eco-friendly transport choices: consider using public transport such as trains to reduce carbon emissions.

2.     Choose a ‘green’ destination: look for venues and providers that prioritise sustainability and have eco-friendly practices in place.

3.     Bring reusable water bottles and food containers: encourage students to bring their reusable water bottles and food containers to reduce single-use plastic waste.

4.     Avoid single-use items: minimize using single-use items such as straws, plastic utensils, and paper napkins.

5.     Educate students on environmental impact: use the trip as an opportunity to educate students on the importance of protecting the environment and ways they can reduce their environmental impact.

6.     Organise a clean-up: plan a clean-up activity at the destination to help preserve the natural environment and promote environmental stewardship.

7.     Respect the environment: encourage students to respect the natural environment and follow Leave No Trace principles.

The grants will be awarded to eight schools in England and Wales for offsite educational visits in the 23/24 academic year. It’s easy to apply, schools are asked to explain how they plan to use the grant and how it will help deliver more sustainable educational visits by the deadline of 18 July 2023.
