About the Nature Park grants

The Department for Education has allocated £15 million in 2024-25 to support schools in increasing students’ access to and engagement with the natural world, as part of its Sustainability and Climate Change Strategy. It is distributing the funding as grants of up to £10,000 per education setting through the National Education Nature Park. The scheme is designed to increase biodiversity on school grounds and get children and young people involved in the process.

Who can apply for a Nature Park grant?

All eligible schools can apply – eligibility is linked to your school’s access to natural spaces. DfE has allocated schools to one of three groups; the ‘List of Eligible Providers’ spreadsheet will tell you what group you are in and therefore if you are eligible for the grant. Schools in groups 2 and 3 are eligible for this round of grants. Top-up grants to group 1 have now closed.

What can schools spend the Nature Park grant on?

  • The emphasis is on making ‘grey’ spaces green with biodiversity improvements, e.g. planters, trees, green walls, water butts, grasslands and ponds

  • outdoor education equipment, e.g. tools and waterproofs

  • fieldwork equipment, e.g. camera traps and digital hand-held devices

  • specialist support from contractors for installation and consultation

RHS has published a helpful guide to what you can and can’t spend the grant on, click the button below.
